Transporterhaus Drop Spindle Fitting Instructions NOTE: These are intended as a guide to fitting Transporterhaus drop spindles on a 64-67 split bus. If you feel this is beyond you get a specialist to do the work or we can fit them for you here in Perranporth. Pictures shown are of 1964-1967 bus.1955-1963 are slightly different but the procedure is the same. ALWAYS USE AXLE STANDS FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY Transporterhaus accepts no responsibility for any crushed bodies, skinned knuckles or botched installs. We hope you find this quick procedure useful but be aware you are doing this at your own risk. Remember this is only a quick guide and you do need a little mechanical experience and some tools! Other parts you will require for the install: 1 adjustable track rod fitted with 1 splitscreen track rod end and 1 bay window track rod end. 1 bay window track rod end to be fitted on your current adjustable track rod. After you have fitted the new track rods check your tracking!
1) Jack up front of bus and place bus on axle stands. 2) Remove front wheel.  Wheel Removed 3) Remove grease cap from drum and undo 27mm or 32mm (depending on year) spindle nuts. Note these are Left handed and Right handed depending on side. Remove drum.  Drum Removed 4) Undo 4 15mm bolts and remove drum backing plate. 5) Remove track rod end from spindle steering arm.  Backing Plate removed 6) Undo 17mm nut and bolt holding Link pin onto trailing arms and take out Link pins.  Removing Link Pins from trailing arms 7) Remove old spindle!  Spindle Removed 8) Clean up link pins and press link pin races out of old spindles and into new spindles. If your seals have seen better days new genuine VW ones are available from Transporterhaus.
 Fitting up Trailing arms 10) Before attaching the link pins to the trailing arms you need to set up the shims for the correct camber. You need a special tool to get the exact camber. If you do not have the tool try fitting 2 shims on the side nearest the trailing arms. Shim behind the mushroom head of the link pin are for storage only. Fit just 1 to clear the machined spindle. Attach spindle to trailing arms with links pins.  Cleaned up and shimmed Link Pins  Fitting up Drop Spindle 11) Use 17mm spanner on the link pins to pull the spindle tight to the trailing arm.  Adjusting Link Pins 12) Brake hose must be routed to bottom wheel cylinder so it does not foul the flipped spindle. TIP - If you do not remove the hose from the cylinder you will not need to bleed the brakes!  Brake hose nose fitted to bottom cylinder 13) Fit new larger bay window track rod end to underneath side of steering knuckle arm. Remember to check your tracking!  Bay window track fitted under steering knuckle to aid chassis clearance 14) Grease spindle thoroughly. Refit drum/bearing/spindle nuts/ grease cap.  Grease every nipple on the spindle regularly! Job done! Bus now 3.5" lower on the front end.  Job done. This is how we roll em Perranporth style! To keep your dropped spindles in good condition regularly grease them. After replacing your track rods it is a good idea to get your tracking checked.
