Transporterhaus Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Drop Spindle Fitting Instructions

NOTE:  These are intended as a guide to fitting TransporterHaus dropped spindles on a Bay Window bus. They will also work for you if you have drop spindles from t2d, Kieftenklok or Volksprojects.  If you feel this is beyond you get a specialist to do the work or we can fit them for you here in Falmouth.

 Pictures shown are of 1971-1972 VW early bay window bus.1968-1970 earlybay and 1973-1979 late bay are slightly different but the procedure is the same.

ALWAYS USE AXLE STANDS FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY

TransporterHaus accepts no responsibility for any crushed bodies, skinned knuckles or botched installs.  We hope you find this quick procedure useful but be aware you are doing this at your own risk.  Remember this is only a quick guide and you do need a little mechanical experience and some tools!

Other parts you will require for the install:

1 adjustable track rod.

2 Eccentric nuts (You already have these on your top ball joints - They can be stuck solid.  Try cutting the ball joint shaft and hitting them with a hammer if they do not easily come off)

After you have fitted the new track rods check your tracking!

1964-1967 Splitscreen Bus Spindles

All spindles are rebuilt by TransporterHaus in Cornwall on our in house lathes and mills.

We always replace all 4 king pin bushes with new phosphor bronze bushes.

We regrind the king pins on our cylindrical grinder.

We fit new genuine VW seals throughout.

We fit new grease nipples.

We fit 2 fibre thrust washers and 4 rubber seals just like VW intended.

What else do I need to know?

Link pins, races and bearings are not supplied but are available in stock should you require them.  The fitting of new link pins, bearings etc is recommended.  Why fit old crap back on while the assemblies are apart?

1964-1967 Drop Spindles

3.5" drop and the best lowered ride on a split bus! or fit in conjuntion with a lowered beam to get super slammed!

We machine the spindle properly on our carbide face and shell mills.  Not hacked at with an angle grinder!

We fit 2 fibre thrust washers and 4 rubber seals just like VW intended.  We do not pad out the king pins with extra shims.  We do not weld up and move the keyway on the male king pin.  This is only achievable when the spindle has been milled.  

We do not weld the spindle or the king pins.

What else do I need to know?

The track rod fixing on the knuckle is reverse tappered for a larger bay window track rod to aid chassis clearance.

1963 only Drop Spindles

These 1 year only crossover spindles were fitted to 63 only buses.  They are 64-67 spindles fitted with 55-63 king pins.  Use these on a 55-63 bus to allow fitment of Porsche 944 discs, or 64-67 (cheap) brakes.
